Annapurna Pictures has optioned Amanda Lindhout’s memoir as starring vehicle for the actress.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo wasn't Rooney Mara's only chance to play a strong female hero adapted from a book. Even though Sony Pictures and Mara didn't score a new franchise with David Fincher's dark adaptation, perhaps due to the bizarre Christmas release, Mara has gone on to find other work, appearing in last year's Her and the upcoming Joe Wright adaptation of Peter Pan, Pan. Now Mara will get another crack at playing a character from a book, but this time the story is real.

Annapurna Pictures has optioned the rights to A House In The Sky, the 2013 memoir from Amanda Lindhout, as a starring vehicle for Rooney Mara. Sky, a New York Times bestseller, chronicles the 15 months Lindhout, a journalist, spent in captivity after an August 2008 abduction by rebel terrorists in Somalia. Lindhout's story captured national news attention after she and her team, Australian photojournalist Nigel Brennan, translator Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi, and two drivers, were taken at gunpoint while on the way to conduct interviews at a refugee camp. Elmi and the drivers were released in January of 2009, but Brennan and Lindhout were held until November of that year once their families paid ransom. During her 460 days in captivity, Lindhout suffered extreme physical and psychological abuse, including starvation, torture, and rape.

The story was co-written by Sara Corbett and released in 2013, where it was found by Mara, like many others, and moved her to bring the harrowing tale to the screen. Annapurna's Megan Ellison will produce.
