The co-writer and director of the next Star Trek movie, Roberto Orci, has been talking about his plan for the film...
Very early work has begun on the new Star Trek movie it seems, with screenwriter and now director Roberto Orci offering one or two hints as to where the new movie will go. Turns out, the answer to that is deep space.
Chatting to the Humans From Earth podcast, Orci said that "in this movie they are closer than they are to the original characters that you have ever seen". He added that "they have set off on their five year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space". See: told you.
Paramount is expected to release the film in the summer of 2016, to tie into the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. The main cast, led by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, are expected to return. Orci will be making his feature directorial debut with the movie.

I'm looking forward to the return of the Horta. I have always wanted to learn more about Hortaculture!
So the final film of the JJverse brings us, almost, back to what they should have started with - actual Star Trek. Oh joy.
As excited as I was about the relaunch/timeline-branch reboot of Trek in 2009, I'm convinced that "vision" is played out and was misplayed entirely. STID made that clear, as did the excessive years between films. We're not going to see more of this timeline after this. These guys (Abrams, Orci, Kurzman et al) made the same mistake Berman-Braga did with "Enterprise" - trying to tell some different story that wasn't really Star Trek. ENT finally worked, too late, when they got around to being part of the universe that people loved, that had become part of popular culture - in its final season.
Not a Trek purist, even though I'm an original, since-first-airing of Man Trap, fan. But increasingly disheartened, and frankly, bored, by what the Bad Robot team has done, and has left undone. At this point waiting for them to play out their hand, go away in 2016, and hopefully the current Star Trek IP holders, CBS, can then do something that works.
All right then. Let's get the third movie released in summer of 2016, and get it out of the way. End the JJ abominations.
Now let's get to the real announcement from CBS/Paramount: A new TV series which brings us all... wait for it... back to the future! "Star Trek - Enterprise H" (or some title like that.)
Someone needs to tell the big execs at CBS/Paramount that all us TV viewers have these neat new things that didn't exist back when TNG/DS9/VOY(and to an extent, ENT) were airing: HD Television screens. I wanna see a Trek TV show set in the future - beyond the time of TNG, etc. I wanna see where things are going - not where things have been. I wanna see the Enterprise H coming at me on my 60 inch TV! Trek is supposed to be about the human condition. Not big explosions and flying fists. Let's have some actual stories.
Oh, and let's drop the "Evil Starfleet Admiral" rut, while we're at it.
You've been waiting a long, long time to use that one, haven't you?
There is a rumor that they may do a new Trek series after the third movie
