Does the Homer estate get royalties if they make an Odyssey movie? Is there even a Homer estate?
We've seen bits and pieces of the Iliadmake it to the big screen in recent years, but it seems like it's been some time since anyone took a stab (in the eye! that's...a cyclops joke) at the Odyssey. No, we're not counting O Brother, Where Art Thou? either. Well, Warner Bros. are about to make that journey (okay, we'll stop) with Fedor Bondarchuk (Stalingrad) directing. Warner Bros. did their take on the Iliadwith Wolfgang Peterson's Troyseveral years back. Somehow, we don't think this one is an actual sequel.
The Odysseymovie is being described as "a large scale epic," to which we reply, "no kidding." If the bottom ever drops out of the superhero movie business, the future could very well be in epic poetry. I'll hold out hope for a virtually endless HBO or cable series adapting the Iliad, the Odyssey, and then they can spin off the Aeneid. Why pay George R.R. Martin when you can have guys like Homer and Virgil for free?
Anyway, it always seems like someone is talking about making the Odyssey. Let's see if this one actually happens. Jeremy Doner is writing the screenplay. You may begin your fantasy casting of Odysseus and Telemachus at any time.
