Cena turns heel? Not quite. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will take on the WWE's cash cow in a 2015 comedy.
Let's face it. As much as fans would love to see some kind of new direction for John Cena, the man isn't ever turning heel. He makes WWE way too much money and gets them too much goodwill as a charity champion. As long as his merch takes up a gigantic chunk of the company's financial intake, he's going to keep smiling for the crowd no matter how much he gets booed in major cities. There's simply no money in making him evil, regardless of how stale his stories get.
At least we'll get the next best thing. Cena will be featured in a villain role in the comedy The Nest, starring Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Josh Brolin. Set for a December 18, 2015 release, The Nest is about two sisters (Fey and Poehler), who decide to throw one last party in their parents' house before it gets sold off. How does the 15-time world champion fit into this? I'm not really sure. Either way, it's very likely that for once he won't be suffering for 20 minutes only to pop up, defeat Fey and Poehler, and act like he's 100% okay while the announcers remind us that like him or hate him, you have to respect him.
This wouldn't be the first time Cena's tangled with the Saturday Night Live family. Back in 2009, in an episode hosted by Tracy Morgan, Cena played a security guard who rushed into battle against the former cast member and stopped short in order to give him a friendly greeting. Morgan suckerpunched Cena and passed him. Shockingly, Cena never got his win back.
Cena's no stranger to acting, having starred in a series of mediocre action movies and that drama about how his mother wanted her son back BUT SHE DIDN'T KNOW HOW! That was the one that came before the movie where Randy Orton threatened to go to the papers if he had to.
It's been a while since Cena's been identified as a villain. Once an egotistical rapper, he turned heroic (and at times hypocritical) back in the tail end of 2003, just in time for Survivor Series. Since then, he's been the WWE's golden goose and they're going to ride that goose until it breaks down completely. Sorry, my metaphors are getting murky. Anyway, comedy movie.
Universal will be releasing The Nest, directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) and written by Paula Pell.
