Roberto Orci doesn't sound too sure about the prospects for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Sinister Six, or Venom.
It's safe to say that neither of Sony's rebooted Spider-Man franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man or The Amazing Spider-Man 2, lived up to critical or box-office expectations. The franchise that was once a surefire bet for a $100 million opening weekend has seemed on uncertain footing after the most recent two films, despite Sony's clear intention to build a shared movie universe similar to what Marvel and Fox have developed for the Avengers, X-Men, and related characters.
However, Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the screenplay for the rather overstuffed Amazing Spider-Man 2, now seems unsure, not only about the plans for spinoff movies like The Sinister Six and Venom, but even about the immediate prospects for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. At the very least, it no longer sounds like he's got a direct hand in the next film claiming that he's "not officially involed with it."
"I don't know what their plans are for that franchise," Orci told IGN. "I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else. There's a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom-- there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business. He's such a popular character. Spider-Man's not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined."
Sony seemed to get cold feet in the aftermath of The Amazing Spider-Man 2's rather chilly critical reception. Earlier reports seemed to indicate that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 had been pushed back as far as 2017, something which contradicted Sony's ambitious plans to release two more Spider-Man films in close succession, possibly after one of the spinoff films, with the studio having locked up release dates as far off as May of 2018.
It's safe to say that we will see The Amazing Spider-Man 3, so anybody salivating at the prospect of Disney getting the Spidey rights back should probably cool their jets. But Sony's plan to try and duplicate the Marvel Studios model for Spidey always felt a little rushed for our taste, even though the most recent installment was packed to the gills with seeds for the future of the franchise.
More on this as it develops, and things will probably develop quickly with San Diego Comic-Con on the horizon.

Nobody wants half a superhero movie to be a cryfest between the hero and the girl. The box office showed that.
The box office for the movie was $704,977,039. What is the expectation of a movie when it is the 66th highest grossing movie of all time and people are calling it a box office disappointment?
For one thing the article never once states anything about domestic gross. It only says box office expectations. Second I guess James Jackson that movies box offices only count in the United States? That is what is called a half truth to make an argument. The movie did not make $201,573,391144 total, it made $704,977,039, which was the 66th highest grossing movie of all time. I guess you could take out people who live in cities next, or maybe how about minorities. Nah, that would be too small. How about all Caucasians. Or people that eat popcorn. Then the gross total might fit your Armageddon argument.
I only know what I've heard. ASM2 was crowded and very busy. Too many enemies and too little time. Considering the movies length it's enough time for maybe half the badguys?
