Paramount Pictures taps director of Before the Fall to make a prequel about The Ring's not-so-cute little girl and her beloved videos.
It’s been 14 years since Gore Verbinski’s American The Ring film terrified audiences around the world. And here we are now first hearing about Paramount’s attempt to dip back into that creepy well for a new installment in the franchise. Not bad for a timetable originally slated for only “seven days.”
Paramount has hired Before the Fall director F. Javier Gutierrez to scare up some new nightmares with a Ring prequel.
The story of what happens when you watch a haunted video tape and a not-so-cute little ghost girl pops out of your TV a week later for a slaughter-and-run, the original Ring film starred Naomi Wattis and was directed by future Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski. A remake of a 1998 Japanese horror movie directed by Hideo Nakata., the American version was a truly unnerving affair and went on to gross $249. 3 million. Its 2005 sequel, which seemed to put a lid on the horror, was ironically directed by Hideo Nakata. However, The Ring Two is widely considered inferior despite its $161.5 million grosses.
With Gutierrez, who is still signed on to direct The Weinstein Company’s remake of The Crow, it appears that this video tape nightmare is ready to go viral.
