Focus Features Chiefs James Schamus and Andrew Karpen announced that Jude Law will skipper the cast as it sails the Black Sea. Black Sea is being produced by Charles Steel for Cowboy Films.
Two-time Oscar nominee Law will play a rogue submarine captain who goes after sunken treasure in the Black Sea with a crew of misfits. Greed gets the better of the men as they get a bad case of cabin fever.
Mr. Schamus and Mr. Karpen commented, “With Jude Law and a terrific galley of actors, audiences will be riveted by the machinations of this crew in Dennis Kelly’s suspenseful script.”
Black Sea will also star Grigoriy Dobrygin and Sergey Puskepalis of How I Ended This Summer; Konstantin Khabenskiy from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which was also produced by Focus Features; Sergey Kolesnikov from A Good Day to Die Hard; Scoot McNairy from Argo; Ben Mendelsohn from The Place Beyond the Pines, anther Focus film; Michael Smiley from Kill List, who won the British Independent Film Award; David Threlfall of Nowhere Boy, and Jodie Whittaker from Film4’s Venus.
Christopher Ross who worked on Eden Lake, will be director of photography along with production designer Nick Palmer who designed Red Tails, costume designer Natalie Ward who stitched together Focus’ The Debt, and editor Justine Wright who worked on Film4’s The Iron Lady.
The new adventure thriller will be directed by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald, who directed One Day in September
Tessa Ross who heads Film4, said, “All of us at Film4 love working with Kevin, and have done so on many of his wonderful films over the last ten years, since his extraordinary feature Touching the Void. We’re all very excited to be embarking on this visceral, underwater thriller with him and with Charles Steel, and all our friends at Focus.”
Cowboy Films also produced The Last King of Scotland, which finally got Forest Whitaker a Best Actor Oscar.
Focus Features also made The World’s End, the new comedy that brought director Edgar Wright back together with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; Closed Circuit, a suspense thriller directed by John Crowley that stars Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall and The Boxtrolls, a new animated feature that will be directed by Anthony Stacchi who directed LAIKA, and Graham Annable, with the voices of Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright and Tracy Morgan. They are also producing the upcoming high-profile fetish film Fifty Shades of Grey.
Black Sea will be released in 2014.
