Watch the trailer for the Disney adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, starring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, and Chris Pine.
Once upon a time, the musical film was as dead as Jacob Marley. But thanks in no small part to Disney and a decade of filmmakers as varied as Rob Marshall, Johnny Depp, and Meryl Streep, the genre has taken on new life as a prestige event occurring almost every holiday season.
But this holiday, all of the elements are coming together for an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s classic Broadway fairytale subversion, Into the Woods. And while there have apparently been changes made to the play that might annoy purists, there is more than enough to seemingly pull anyone else in since director Marshall (Chicago) has rallied a star-studded cast to his production, including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, James Corden, and Johnny Depp (as a werewolf).
Into the Woods is the story of a series of fairytale characters of folklore having grown up from their idyllic youth into a world where wishes and daydreams can take on a slightly malevolent undertone.
Into the Woods begins it theatrical climb on this year’s Christmas Day.
