Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is in talks for a very different take on the Ghostbusters reboot.
You'll note that we didn't call this one Ghostbusters 3 in the headline. We'll get to that in a minute. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) is in talks to direct a Ghostbusters reboot "with female characters played by comedic actresses in Ghostbusting roles." That's quite a departure from everything else we've heard about the ongoing attempts to bring the Ghostbusters franchise back to life, and reports are that this is notGhostbusters 3.
Feig is teaming up with Melissa McCarthy for Spy, which is due out in May of 2015. You can see why we might immediately speculate on her possible connection to this new Ghostbusters film. Emma Stone's name was mentioned in connection with an earlier version of Ghostbusters 3 a long time ago, and is a serious presence in a number of Sony projects, so we suppose we can dream about her potential involvement, as well.
This is probably the most interesting turn the entire Ghostbusters saga has taken in recent years. Setting aside that it's been 25 years since the already mediocre Ghostbusters 2, very little about any potential Ghostbusters 3 (or reboot) has managed to raise much enthusiasm. Maybe a drastic change of direction like this is exactly what this needs. However, it's still not 100% clear whether this is a total reboot, or if Ghostbusters 3could exist independently of this.
Varietyis quick to point out that "no formal negotiations have taken place" but it looks like this one has some legs. Regardless of Feig's involvement, the fact that Sony is discussing the idea of a female-led, genre-hopping mega-franchise like this is worth paying attention to. At the very least, it's the most lively conversation starter we've seen on this project in quite some time.
