Lonely Island is making a movie with Universal Pictures and Judd Apatow. it will be set in the music world. And hopefully a boat.
For viewers of a certain age, Saturday Night Live meant only one thing in the last decade: a string of bizarre, random, and often funny “SNL Digital Shorts” every week. And the biggest asset these videos all had is when their writers and directors, Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer, and Jorma Taccone, would occasionally release a new music video under the title of The Lonely Island.
Whether it was discovering how much of a BAMF Natalie Portman really is in her private time or just what cineaste love really means to a pop star like Michael Bolton—and especially whenever Justin Timberlake stopped by for a week to stick his “Dick in a Box” with Samberg—The Lonely Island developed on online viral legion of fans that would even buy their records.
Well now the Lonely Island is back in a movie format, as Universal Pictures has announced that it is co-producing with Judd Apatow a new movie that stars and is also produced by Samberg, Shaffer and Taccone. What that film is remains a mystery, however, Universal did reveal that it will be set in the music world.
Of course it will be. Truly, this news means that “Everything is Awesome.”
