Having gone head to head with Warner Bros earlier in the year, Amazon now seems to be in dispute with Disney.
Amazon.com seems to be finding itself in no shortage of disputes of late, and it appears to have entered another one. It's already in disagreement with book publisher Hachette, over the prices of e-books. As such, Amazon has over the past months reportedly held back pre-ordered options, delayed delivery and removed the discounts on titles published by Hachette.
Earlier this year, Amazon also did battle with Warner Bros, which led to the removal, on its US site at least, of preorders for titles such as The LEGO Movie and 300: Rise Of An Empire. It's said that one of Amazon's most potent weapons is its ability to remove the option to preorder titles, and for a while, those looking to order DVD and Blu-ray copies of upcoming Warner Bros titles were met with a message telling them to sign up when the title in question became available. That's in spite of said titles being widely available for preorder elsewhere. Amazon and Warner Bros seemed to resolve their differences, and preorders resumed.
However, Amazon doesn't seem intent on winning too many friends, as for the third time this year, there's talk that it's in dispute with a major company. As such, the 'remove pre-orders' weapon has been pulled back out of the locker. This time, the problem appears to be with Disney. Again, on the US store, preorders for the disc versions of upcoming Disney titles such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Muppets Most Wantedhave disappeared. Digital versions are still available.
Neither Disney or Amazon is commenting on the apparent stand-off. You do wonder if Amazon will eventually pick a fight it can't win, though.
