Godzilla 2 has a release date penciled in for June 2018, giving Gareth Edwards time to finish his trip to a galaxy far, far away.
When Legendary Pictures let it be known at Comic-Con this year that Godzilla would return with some rambunctious buddies like Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidora, it was enough to make any fan smile…and wonder how Gareth Edwards could still be attached if he is making a Star Wars movie next?
Well, the answer has come with Legendary revealing that Godzilla 2 will stomp into cinemas like a dinosaur in a metropolis on June 8, 2018. The four-year gap is surprising, but it certainly allows director Edwards time enough to finish up the first standalone theatrical Star Wars movie ever made, which Disney has penciled in for December 16, 2016.
The previous Godzilla movie opened last May and has earned to date $507 million worldwide, $200 million of which is from the U.S. alone. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston, the Legendary and Warner Bros. release reimagined Godzilla as a force of nature that will protect us from undersea beasts with a sweet tooth for radiation.
