We have a look at Young Ones, a sci-fi western that offers new twists on old genre tropes.
Westerns have struggled at the box office in recent memory. Cowboys and Aliens, Jonah Hex, A Million Ways To Die In the West, and The Lone Ranger all underperformed, not quite making an impact with audiences. Perhaps the upcoming film Young Ones will be movie that breaks the trend.
Directed by Jake Paltrow, the brother of Gwyneth, Young Ones is a blend of sci-fi and western that looks to take the tropes of the latter and infuse subtle elements of the former to put a unique twist on a familiar story. Set in the distant future where water is scarce, a teenager (Nicholas Hoult) will do whatever it takes to protect his family and foster his relationship with his love (Elle Fanning).
The romantic thread running throughout a film that centers on a struggle for water feels like familiar territory for a western, but the sci-fi technology and dystopian dread that flows throughout the trailer feels fresh. Michael Shannon playing Fanning’s protective father adds some pedigree, and Kodi Smit-McPhee pops up in another project centering on the destruction of mankind after this summer’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
