Jessica Chastain is set to star with Matt Damon in Ridley Scott's space survival movie set on Mars: The Martian.
At the height of another major year for her career, including an acclaimed (and award buzzy) performance in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby and a whirlwind of dubious True Detective rumors, Jessica Chastain has signed on to her next project: Ridley Scott’s out of this world sci-fi thriller, The Martian.
While the future for Prometheus and Blade Runner sequels continues to be mysterious, the high-concept filmmaker who first breathed true horror into the space opera with 1979’s Alien is returning to the genre again with The Martian, and he has cast Chastain to as his heroine; she’ll appear next to the already cast Matt Damon.
The Martian will be the story of an astronaut whose ship crashes onto Mars, leaving her to her own devices as she figures out how to survive the uninhabitable planet, as well as how to get back home.
Chastain continues her impressive streak that arguably began with her movie-stealing performance in the Terrence Malick cinema mosaic, The Tree of Life. She has since appeared in Zero Dark Thirty, The Help, and The Debt. She is due to appear again this year alongside Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in the highly anticipated Christopher Nolan space opera, Interstellar.
