Despite the franchise-takedown credits of 22 Jump Street, Schmidt and Jenko will be going to medical school after all in 23 Jump Street.
Despite all the good-natured ribbing (or vicious sarcasm) shaded on the idea of another sequel after 22 Jump Street from the movie itself, Sony Pictures Entertainment nonetheless is ready to take another class with Schmidt and Jenko.
Sony Pictures and Original Films are moving forward on 23 Jump Street with Randy Rothman attached to write the screenplay for the sequel. Rothman, who was one of the three screenwriters credited for penning 22 Jump Street, and who also scripted last year’s Grudge Match, is now left with the key role of deciding if Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum should really go to nursing school when they move across Jump Street for the third time.
It is unclear whether the writing-directing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be back to helm the laugher, but given their rather brutal and final takedown of sequel franchising during the post-credits of 22 Jump Street, we have our doubts. However, to continue the meta-humor, perhaps Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and can direct the next one? It’s not replacing Jonah Hill, but it certainly keeps the fun alive!
22 Jump Street grossed $319 million worldwide to date.
