Individuals who illegally downloaded The Expendables 3 might just be set to receive a legal letter...
We had a feeling this might happen. A month before The Expendables III was released in cinemas, a finished version of the film appeared on download sites, and by the time the movie was finally out, it had been illegally downloaded over two million times.
Partly as a consequence of that - and you'd have to suggest there was at least some link, even though The Expendables III's PG-13/12A approach didn't help - the film spluttered at the US box office. Whilst non-US takings held up a bit better, The Expendables III took just $38m in America. And Millennium Films, the company that backed the film, is seeking recompense for those who saw the film illegally for free.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Millennium Films has begun sending out demand letters to individuals who downloaded the movie, in an escalation of the action that had previously been taken. Recipients have been reporting that the letter gives them until October 5th "to access the settlement offer and settle online."
Furthermore, Lionsgate, who distributed the film, has expanded its own action too. It's already begun legal proceedings against a series of torrent websites, and it's now added a couple more sites to its action.
As for the individuals targeted, it's unclear what will happen to those who don't settle, but it's a fair bet that Millennium will at least try and take a few of them to court.
