Here’s our first look at Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, starring Amy Adams.
It’s been a long time since I’ve had any interest in a film directed by Tim Burton, but Big Eyes might be the one that brings me back around. The first trailer has arrived for the film, in which Amy Adams plays artist Margaret Keane, whose distinctive pictures of kids with extra-large eyes became hugely popular in the 1950s and ‘60s. But Margaret’s husband Walter (Christoph Waltz) took all the credit for the work, eventually leading to the couple splitting up and battling each other in court over the ownership of the paintings and the merchandising empire built around them.
After helming a long string of bloated, effects-heavy and soulless corporate products like Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Dark Shadows, it seems like Burton has returned to actual human drama, complete with questions about art, creativity and commercial success. Adams and Waltz are joined by Danny Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Krysten Ritter and the great Terence Stamp in the movie, which opens on December 25.
Watch the trailer (via Yahoo! Movies) and read the official synopsis below.
Directed and produced by Tim Burton, Big Eyes is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters of the 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane's art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions. Big Eyes centers on Margaret's awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.
