While Leonard Nimoy has participated as Spock Prime in both of the recent Star Trek movies – 2009’s Star Trek and last year’s Star Trek Into Darkness– his old commander, William Shatner, hasn’t been so lucky. Although there was originally a cameo written into the script for the 2009 film, in which Captain Kirk appeared on a hologram recording with a message for his friend Spock, the scene was eventually dropped. Shatner himself expressed some chagrin that director J.J. Abrams was unable to find a place for him, but has still shown interest in turning up at some point in the new Trek series.
Well, he might just get his wish. According to Badass Digest, the script for Star Trek 3 includes a scene that features both Kirk and Spock from the Star Trek Prime universe. If this comes to pass, it will be the first time the two actors have shared the screen as those characters since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the last film to feature the entire classic cast. Roberto Orci – who is all but officially directing Trek 3– wants to make this happen, probably to earn some goodwill from fans who were rightfully disgusted with Into Darkness.
There’s no word on whether this scene will make it to the final shooting script, but we’ll probably know more as Trek 3 warps toward its reported February 2015 start of production. According to Trek Movie, Paramount wants to get the film – which will allegedly be set deep into the Enterprise’s five-year mission and will actually take place somewhere in space as opposed to Earth – out in the summer of 2016 to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
