The Real Genius movie is becoming a Real Genius TV series, courtesy of NBC and Sony.
The parade of movies getting made into TV shows just keeps on ummmm...parading. Next up is Real Genius, the 1985 film from Valley Girl director Martha Coolidge that helped rocket Val Kilmer to stardom. The Real GeniusTV series is in development at NBC, with Adam Sandler's production company (Happy Madison) and Sony behind it.
Well, if NBC is looking for a niche-comedy to fill the void left by Community, this could be it. If they're looking for a show that can compete with the quirk of the CBS'Big Bang Theory juggernaut, then Real Geniusseems to offer the right premise.
The film was a late summer hit in 1985, and dealt with the antics of a group of students at Pacific Tech, developing an experimental chemical laser. Of course, that tech is eyed by less than idealistic forces. No word on whether the Real Genius TV series will try and follow that end of things. We'd just like to be sure that Lazlo shows up.
