In a recent interview, the comedy duo Key and Peele disclosed the status of the Police Academy reboot and their other new projects.
In took a while, but Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are finally getting Hollywood to notice their work.
Their Comedy Central sketch show, Key and Peele, struggled to pull in viewers despite the numerous viral hits it produced, but now in its fourth season, the show firmly has a place as one of the premier sketch shows on television. Its writers and stars, the former MADtv cast members, are using the show’s success to branch out into other ventures, including producing a Police Academyreboot, turning one of their most popular sketches into a movie and working alongside comedy legend Judd Apatow in the early stages of another project.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Key and Peele note how busy they are these days, but there are exciting times ahead for the Comedy Central stars.
They spoke about the progress on the Police Academy reboot, telling EW that they were brought in to take the creative lead and their two friends, former MADtv star Ike Barinholtz, and Dave Stassen, a writer and producer for The Mindy Project, will pen the script.
As for whether they’ll be in the film: “When we start working with the script and seeing it, we’ll make the decision,” Peele said. “Is Key and Peele a distraction from Police Academy? We’ll figure it out. Either way, we’ll make the best call for the movie.”
The duo is currently in negotiations with Paramount to make a “Substitute Teacher” movie based on one of their viral sketches. As for their untitled Judd Apatow project, don’t expect it any time soon. “We’re starting at step one again with that,” Key said. “There was an idea with Judd, [but] we’re not doing that idea anymore. Now we’re going to start from ground zero and start all over again.”
