Despite shooting primarily around Detroit, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is about to hang its cape in Chicago.
When reading Batman comics as a kid, I always imagined Gotham City being located somewhere between New York and the second star to the right. Oh sure, after Tim Burton’s dreamscape version of Batman, it headed more in the other direction, but still modern times have apparently relocated it closer to the Windy City.
Despite Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice primarily being under production in Detroit, it was revealed this morning that the superhero crossover is also going to be crossing state borders (or at least Lake Michigan) to get to Illinois. Beginning in November, Batman and Superman are hanging their capes again in Chicago.
The news, as broken by Chicago’s Fox 32 news station, indicates that Chicago will double as Metropolis (as it did very briefly for several shots in Man of Steel) to counter the drabness of Gotham, as personified by Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’s depiction of Detroit. However, this also has a bit of meta-irony since Chicago famously served as the broad location shooting of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and especially The Dark Knight, the latter of which basically is set in the Second City.
Could there be some poetic meaning in the previous big screen incarnation of Gotham (urban Hell on earth) now counting as the DC Cinematic Universe’s best of the best locales, i.e. Metropolis? Or it could just be convenient Midwest proximity. You decide!
Production in Chicago is expected to last about two weeks with four to five days being in downtown Chicago.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, picks up after the ending of 2013’s Man of Steel as Superman (Henry Cavill) deals with the aftermath of his battle with General Zod. Inevitably, his super-status places him on a collision course with the Dark Knight (Ben Affleck). The film also feature Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane reprising their roles from the previous Superman movie. Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons have been cast as Lex Luthor and Alfred Pennyworth, respectively. Principal photography is already underway in Michigan Motion Picture Studios, as well as in Detroit.
