In a surprising announcement, Paramount Pictures has revealed that Interstellar will be opening two days early in 35mm and 70mm IMAX!
I don’t know about you, but Interstellar has been my most anticipated movie of 2014. And Christopher Nolan is now making sure that for devoted lovers of the medium, it will indeed be seen as a film.
In a surprising announcement, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. revealed today, in the same news cycle as the third Interstellar trailer reveal, that the film will be arriving in theaters two days early on November 5th in glorious 35mm and 70mm IMAX. The celluloid event will occur at 225 locations across the United States and Canada.
In really is a testament to Mr. Nolan’s current pull that not only was he able to convince Paramount to let him shoot a major intended blockbuster on 35mm and 65mm IMAX film stock (with no chance of 3D surcharges ever even entering the conversation), but has now convinced them of the additional cost of making film prints that will shipped around the North American continent. Along with filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, Nolan stands as a purist defender of celluloid that helped the medium not be discontinued by Kodak earlier this year. And now, he may be offering one of the few truly final experiences of celluloid moviegoing in the world (at least for new wide release films).
Nolan has previously seen both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises released in select IMAX theaters as 70mm prints.
Interstellar is a mysterious adventure about a group of scientists and explorers who must go into space to save mankind’s destiny following a negative effect on Earth’s crops. It can sound a bit vague, but you can head over to our Interstellar: Everything We Know article for more details about this intentional mystery.
The movie is based on a script written by Jonathan Nolan (originally meant for Steven Spielberg to direct) and Christopher Nolan, and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Wes Bentley, Topher Grace, John Lithgow, and Michael Caine.
Interstellar takes off November 7, 2014.
