Simon Kinberg chats about the Deadpool movie and its place in the grand scheme of Fox's X-Men plan.
If it ain't a shared universe, fans ain't interested. We're just waiting for the rom-com shared universe. Actually, we aren't. The point is that if you don't think Fox hasn't been paying careful attention to what Marvel has built, you're not paying attention at all. How does this relate to the Deadpoolmovie? We're glad you asked...
Simon Kinberg, the gent who has served as writer and executive producer on a whole mess of X-Men movies, including the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, has a plan for Deadpool. And everything else, for that matter. There had been talk for ages that the Deadpoolmovie as it was currently configured (involving the script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick) wouldn't fit in any X-Men cinematic universe. And it wouldn't. But now? Well, we'll let Mr. Kinberg tell you.
“There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it's part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”
That Reese and Wernick Deadpool script is still in place, as is director Tim Miller (we think), and we presume Ryan Reynolds in the title role. But it's being tweaked, as there has been some chatter (but nothing definitive!) that it would be toned down from its original "R" rating to a more superhero-friendly PG-13. The rating aside, it's likely that some of the more meta moments of the draft could be toned down a little to allow for Deadpoolto fit more comfortably with other X-Men flicks.
Not too comfortably we hope.
We write about Deadpool a lot over here.
