Adam Sandler's comedy western is dropped by Warner Bros. But is that four-deal picture with Netflix the reason why?
The news that Netflix had inked a deal with Adam Sandler for four feature films last week (that we reported here) made a few waves, not least due to a bizarre press release where Sandler 'joked' that he signed on because Netflix rhymed with "wet chicks." Given the quality of the gags in recent Sandler movies, we couldn't even be bothered to roll our eyes.
However, the deal is apparently having some interesting consequences.
Firstly, the four films that Adam Sandler is developing for Netflix presumably won't be going to cinemas first. But whilst the deal doesn't prohibit Sandler from pursuing existing big screen commitments, one report now suggests that it's given at least one studio cold feet.
Warner Bros, which backed last summer's Blended, was in talks with Sandler about making the comedy western The Ridiculous Six. The project - once a Sony film - was already facing challenges, after the disappointing box office of both Blended, and Seth MacFarlane's comedy western, A Million Ways ToDie In The West. Furthermore, there were apparently disagreements over the required budget Sandler's Happy Madison production company would need to make the film.
Yet the Netflix deal may have been the final straw, and Warner Bros, reports The Hollywood Reporter, has backed out of talks overRidiculous Six. Sandler still has an ongoing deal with Warner Bros, and apparently is also possibly making Grown Ups 3for Sony, however.
Furthermore, Sandler has just finished up shooting on next summer's Pixels, and also has done voice work for Hotel Transylvania 2. He presumably will now get cracking with his Netflix commitments, though. Ridiculous Six may yet find a home there.
