Paul Feig has confirmed that his female Ghostbusters movie will be a reboot, and "really scary."
When word first started trickling out about Paul Feig creating a female-fronted Ghostbustersmovie, there was all manner of speculation and potential misinformation out there. One thing that was floated repeatedly was the idea that this one wouldn't be a reboot, nor would it be Ghostbusters 3. Well, one of those was true. Feig's Ghostbusterswill be a reboot after all.
"I love origin stories. That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?"
To quote him further, "everything is up for grabs right now." As for the potential of "classic" Ghostbusters making appearances, Mr. Feig would "welcome them with open arms," but they would be "in different roles now."
As for his writing partnership with Katie Dippold (who wrote The Heat), he said that they're both "obsessed with how do we make a comedy really scary." It's this idea of the film being as laugh out loud funny as the original with more actual scares that we find intriguing (see: Cabin in the Woods). The question then becomes, what of the "proper"Ghostbusters 3? Does this film now replace that project entirely? It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing...
