Jai Courtney sort of answers some questions about the new Terminator.
Is the woefully named Terminator: Genisys a sequel? A remake? A reboot? It’s kind of confusing what they’re doing with the franchise this time around, and even one of the cast members doesn’t quite seem to know the answer. Divergent star Jai Courtney, taking over for Michael Biehn and Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese, was asked by the Huffington Post to describe the film:
“What I can say is that we start in a place we’re familiar with from the early films and then, you know, circumstances change. It somewhat shifts the course of events from that point. It’s not necessarily a sequel or a reboot. I don’t even know how you brand it correctly. We’re not remaking one of the early ‘Terminator’ movies. And it doesn’t necessarily carry on from the point where we left off.”
So it sounds like they’re at least starting this thing off as a straight remake and then veering off into some new direction – whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen. But another quote from Courtney, this time via a site called The Arnold Fans, may be more alarming to some fans:
“I would love to see it be rated R, but I don’t think it will. I think in this day & age, it’s much more likely to be PG-13. There were no f-bombs. But there’ll be a healthy amount of movie violence.”
Now I don’t necessarily subscribe to the whole “it must be rated R to be any damn good” school of thought when it comes to certain films. Yes, the previous films were rated R (except for Terminator Salvation), but times have changed and a lot more violence can get through with a PG-13. More importantly, these are science fiction films – as long as the story is well-told and imaginative, violence should be only secondary and used when needed. Yes, even for the Terminator movies.
Having said that, I’m still not feeling this reboot/remake/whatsis, which comes out July 1, 2015. What about you?
