George Clooney mocks his Batman & Robin legacy at New York Comic-Con, claiming that he even asked for Adam West's backstage forgiveness.
There is no denying that the Walt Disney Company’s New York Comic-Con debut this afternoon was a roaring success. They showed a cornucopia of clips from Big Hero 6 and screened the first teaser for Tomorrowland, which curtailed into a massive five-plus minute reveal of the film that we detailed right here beat-by-beat.
However, the undeniable highlight was George Clooney making a surprise appearance—and apologies for Batman & Robin. According to the eternally charismatic Clooney, he even submitted a mea culpa to the first (beloved) live-action Caped Crusader, Adam West.
During the cheers and applause of Comic-Con revelers, the Disney panel moderator Chris Hardwick cut through the goodwill with one hell of a backhanded compliment (even if it was all in jest).
“That’s an excellent Bruce Wayne costume,” Hardwick smirked to Clooney, who laughed along with the rest of the room.
“I think since Batman that I’ve been disinvited from Comic-Con,” the movie star sheepishly conceded.
Hardwick walked back the ribbing by stating that no one here would say that to Clooney’s face. Continuing with the self-deprecation, the Tomorrowland star said that he’s read the Internet comments section.
He then also added an amusing anecdote that I hope to Alfred is true: “I just met Adam West [back stage] there,” Clooney said. “And I apologized to him… ‘Freeze, freeze.’ Sorry about that.”
Given the uproarious laughter from the geeky room, I suspect that he’s forgiven. Take it while you can, George. One teaser trailer of Ben Affleck as Batman later, and you, Mr. West, and the rest of the Batman family will be out with the baby and the bathwater all over again.
