Sam Raimi has returned to Sony Pictures to direct his first non-superhero/fantasy film in over a decade: Matthew Quick's Love May Fail.

The reports of Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures’ professional demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Seven years since Spider-Man 3, and four years after Raimi walked away from a fourth wall-crawling adventure, the blockbuster director is back at Sony Pictures for a very different kind of movie event: the adaptation of Matthew Quick’s Love May Fail.

A departure from a decade of superhero spectacles for Raimi, including last year’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, Love May Fail returns to the intimate small town narratives that made Raimi’s name surprisingly synonymous with quirky dramas in the 1990s.

Quick, who also penned the novel that became the basis for the Oscar winning Silver Linings Playbook, saw his latest book published last June. In it, Love May Fail follows a woman who weathers her marriage’s implosion in the face of adultery. In an attempt to reinvent herself, she returns to her small hometown where her favorite English teacher stands as a pariah after being fired from her job due to a classroom scandal.

The production also reunites Raimi with Matt Tolmach, who produced all three Spider-Man films with Raimi, and who currently produces The Amazing Spider-Man franchise with Avi Arad. Ellizabeth Cantillon will also executive produce Love May Fail.
