Javier Bardem has been linked to Pirates of the Caribbean 5, in which he is expected to play a ghostly pirate villain.
Javier Bardem has a habit of playing big bads in franchise these days. But when they can help enliven something like 007 with 2012’s fantastic Skyfall, the idea of him playing the big bad in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is certainly a welcome one (especially after 2011’s less than thrilling Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides).
Variety is reporting this with anonymous sources, so take it with a grain of salt, that Bardem could be lining up to square off against Johnny Depp in the next Pirates film, which may be all the easier for him, since his wife Penelope Cruz is expected to return for the next adventure as Captain Jack Sparrow’s recurring love interest.
Currently, the only production that Bardem has on the horizon is the already filming Sean Penn thriller The Last Face (which he will co-star in with Charlize Theron), so his schedule looks relatively free for the shoot in Australia, which will not be commenced earlier than January 2015.
The reports also indicate that Bardem will be playing a ghost pirate, which again is not too dissimilar from the original Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). However with Kon-Tiki’s Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg in the directors’ chair, this can hopefully be a worthwhile sea voyage.
