Channing Tatum talks candidly about what he wants a Gambit movie to be and how far along they are in the process of making it.

With all this recent talk in the last few days about Marvel’s potential Civil War Captain America 3 film, and DC releasing the totality of its film schedule earlier this morning (Wonder Woman is finally happening!), Fox’s own far longer and fully operational cinematic universe is almost flying under the radar. But how can that be when it has Channing Tatum as Gambit of the X-Men movies?

While speaking candidly with MTV, Tatum, who is in the upcoming The Book of Life, reflected on how they are currently hammering out a script, and how it is seeking to be a departure from the current slate of “save the world” superhero movies.

“We’re finding a writer and sort of beating it out,” Tatum said on the Gambit solo adventure. He then added, “I don’t want to give too much away, because we don’t know that much right now other than who Gambit is—we really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but not for the first one.”

Ergo, movement continues on Gambit if ever so slowly. Currently, there is no release date for the film, but if you head over to our listing of the complete superhero movie schedule between now and 2020, you will find that Fox has already picked off the plum real estate spot of July 13, 2018. That is certainly a lot of time for Tatum to get his vehicle ready for Gambit, whereas another full-throttled X-Men movie in 2018 seems less likely. Sure, there is only a two-year gap between this summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, however executive producer Simon Kinberg has already confirmed that Apocalypse is the end of the “First Class Trilogy.” While that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence’s presences in the franchise, it does indicate Fox will need to pick a new direction—and how much they’re willing to spend to bring that trio (or part of it) back.

A Channing Tatum Gambit flick to fill the void on their current biennial schedule may be their ace in the hole.
