The popular video game is hitting theaters, and Shawn Levy is the frontrunner to direct.
The Minecraftmovie is officially a go at Warner Bros. and the studio has started building the project brick by brick, now tapping Shawn Levy to direct.
Levy has begun negotiations to helm the film based on the popular video game. Despite the negative reactions to Levy’s latest star-studded flop, This Is Where I Leave You, Warner Bros. feels comfortable with the director taking charge, based on his box office success with family-friendly films like the Night At the Museum series.
Minecraft is an indie sandbox game, where players create an avatar and have free reign to build a fortress of their liking, with survival elements thrown in. At night, creatures attack the structure, and it’s up to your building skills to make sure you last the night. With humble origins, Minecraft has gone on to be a massive success, with 54 million copies sold across all platforms and huge merchandising potential.
Levy’s next film will be another Museum picture, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which hits theaters December 19.
