The Fast & Furious 7 director just signed a nice deal with New Line Pictures. He may have some caped work at Warner Bros. too.
Tucked away in the announcement that James Wan would direct The Conjuring 2(which we covered here) was this little quote from New Line President Toby Emmerich (courtesy of Deadline), "James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Bros or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan, and a reason for bringing him into the family. He’s the only overall director with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one."
Given that Shazam is the only DC Comics movie on the slate at New Line, it immediately perked our ears up. Mr. Wan's background in supernatural horror and action make him a natural fit for Shazam, a movie that we admittedly know virtually nothing about, other than the fact that it cast its villain (or anti-hero, in Dwayne Johnson) long before it landed a hero or director. Darren Lemke is writing. It's currently scheduled for release on April 5th, 2019.
Based on his current commitments it's unlikely that he's directing Wonder Woman, scheduled for June 23rd, 2017. However, both The Flash (March 23rd, 2018) and Aquaman(July 27th, 2018) would fit nicely. While there's an outside chance he could end up directing a Fantastic Beasts movie at Warner Bros. (only the first one has a director, David Yates), I get the feeling that he will end up doing a superhero movie. This is based on nothing, mind you. Just a hunch.
