Ewan McGregor on what he thinks of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and the Star Wars followers he's no fan of...
Yesterday, we learned that the rumours linking Ewan McGregor to playing Doctor Strange for Marvel weren't, ultimately, true (Benedict Cumberbatch has the role). But McGregor is a busy man anyway, having recently made his Broadway debut.
In a chat with Details, McGregor was asked in particular about his Star Wars work. In particular: does he agree with people who believe that The PhantomMenace is "a piece of crap?"
"I watched it once, at the premiere," McGregor said. "So I'm not in a good position to judge."
He did add that "they had a tall order, the three films I did. The fans waited so long and wanted to feel like they did when they watched the first film, but they were grown-ups by that time." He also added that "I don't mind the criticism. I've heard it to my face."
But he's not a fan of every Star Wars fan he come sacross. "I've never been to one of the conventions," he said. "The people I meet are the fuckers who want me to sign Star Wars photos so they can sell them on the internet or the people at premieres who are crushing children against barriers to get me to sign their fucking picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi."
"They're not fans", he added. "They're parasitical lowlifes and fucking wankers".
McGregor also told Details that the plan is to shoot the Trainspottingsequel in 2016. The full interview, and it's well worth a read, can be found here.
