Lionsgate will be releasing the next Divergent film, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, in 3D as well as 2D come March 2015.

The most popular YA series, currently gearing up for its penultimate film release, has uniquely remained a celluloid-based 2D experience to date. Indeed, Lionsgate even shot the second Hunger Games film partially in IMAX to intensify its analog experience. However, Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment’s heir apparent to the YA throne, Divergent, has no such qualms about embracing the preferred moviegoing methods of the 21st century.

Lionsgate announced today that The Divergent Series: Insurgent will be coming to theaters and right out of the screen in March 2015, as the film will be released in both 2D and 3D.

“The second film in the Divergent franchise takes the story and action to another level and, by partnering with RealD, we were able to blend gripping performances and mind-blowing spectacle to create a unique event on screen," producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher said. “We cannot wait to share this experience with audiences around the world.”

The Divergent Series: Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite.  Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them.  Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent enters theaters in 2D and 3D on March 20, 2015.
