Caesar is going to get all Biblical on your ass.
During a recent press event at the Fox studio lot in Los Angeles to promote the December 2nd Blu-ray/DVD release of last summer’s outstanding Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, director Matt Reeves dropped a few hints at what we might expect from the third film in the rebooted series, which he is returning to direct (via Nerdist):
“(We want) the story to be able to connect from the human to the ape world. So first one, (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is sort of how (Caesar) goes from humble beginnings to becoming a revolutionary. In Dawn, he rose to the occasion of becoming a leader, a great leader in really challenging difficult times. The notion of what we’re after in the third is continue that trajectory to how he becomes the seminal figure in ape history and almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses of sorts, a kind of mythic ascension. We’re trying to play out those themes and try to explore it in this universe of exploring human nature under the guise of apes.”
It makes sense that Caesar’s legacy would expand as this series inches closer and closer to meeting up in the timeline with the apes-dominated future we first encountered in the original Planet of the Apes. With the possibility of all-out war also looming between apes and humans in the third film, we can certainly picture Caesar leading his people out of the ruins of the old world and establishing a new and permanent simian civilization.
Incidentally, speaking with Collider, Reeves said that he has a title in mind for the movie and that it “might be one word shorter.” What do you think that could be? Rule the Planet of the Apes? Conquer the Planet of the Apes? Or about lopping off two words and just calling it The Planet of the Apes? Give us your best guess below.
