We learn new details about X-Men: Apocalypse that suggest Magneto and Mystique's romance (and star power) will be anchoring the film.

X-Men: Apocalypse is still about a year and a half away from reigning down the glory of En Sabah Nur upon moviegoers’ heads, but we increasingly know more about the plot details. Indeed, Simon Kinberg, the X-Men: Apocalypse screenwriter and executive producer, has already let slip that Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and her relationship with Beast (Nicholas Hoult) will be further explored after flying under the radar in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now, we also know that Magneto will be joining them in that spotlight.

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, the current draft of the screenplay apparently takes a special interest in Mystique and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). According to their unnamed source (so sip this with some salt), Fox is taking full advantage of Lawrence and Fassbender’s ever-rising star wattage, “placing Mystique and Magneto’s romance front and center.”

Generally speaking, I am not opposed to more Mystique, despite the obvious fact that her role was beefed up in Days of Future Past because of the actress who plays her. Truthfully, making Mystique a child of both Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto was a clever invention on X-Men: First Class’ part, and one that allows an actual character proxy to their dueling ideologies, which was executed to great effect in Days of Future Past. Also, it was inventive because it was done without ever turning it into a love triangle.

Mystique with Beast or Mystique with Magneto, I personally would just prefer Mystique be her own character as she was in the last film. Or, at least have more scenes with McAvoy’s Xavier, as their relationship was hands down the most interesting in that film, and it didn’t even require contrived unrequited love.

We’ll see for sure how this really works when X-Men: Apocalypse descends into cinemas in 2016. In the meantime check out everything else we know about X-Men: Apocalypse right here.
