M. Night Shyamalan’s secret low budget picture picked up by Universal
Shh. Don’t tell anyone, but M. Night Shyamalan made another movie. A secret movie that he wrote and directed covertly at his house in Pennsylvania. Even his neighbors didn't know what was going on. They just saw lights. Strange lights. And a megaphone and a clipboard.
Universal Pictures found out about Shyamalan’s The Visit and bought the worldwide distribution rights. The Visit should hit theaters on September 11, 2015.
Shyamalan wanted get back to his earlier, creepier works before the studios started paying for things. He wrote and directed The Visitoutside the studio system without telling anyone. He paid for The Visit himself and shot it in and around his home in Pennsylvania. The Visit was shopped in partnership with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. Blumhouse specializes in low-budget horror. Their last movie, Ouija, topped the box office for two weeks straight.
The Visittells the story of brother and sister who go to grandparents’ farm in Pennsylvania for a week. The kids find out that the grandparents are doing something disturbing. They probably don’t find out what it is until the last few minutes and by then it’s been twisted from what we expect. At least we can hope.
