It's now confirmed: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will be partially shot in IMAX, making it the third Batman movie to use the format.
This weekend, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is preparing to at least make another small fortune in IMAX theaters around the country due to the director’s insistence of utilizing the 65mm cameras necessary to fill those screens like no other. However, he got his start at pioneering the use of real IMAX in Hollywood moviemaking with his Batman films, and with Batman it remains since Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is now confirmed as being shot, at least partially, in IMAX.
First posited as happening by an eagle-eyed fan on Twitter yesterday, IMAX has now confirmed to Variety that parts of the Batman v. Superman film will be filmed for the 70mm presentation.
How much of the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice story will be captured in the highest resolution filmic format possible is unclear, however it marks the third superhero movie to utilize IMAX cameras, and the seventh Hollywood picture to also do so for a narrative fiction. Other films that showcased IMAX photography include The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Star Trek Into Darkness, and next year’s upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The news broke on Twitter yesterday just as fan pictures from Chicago revealed that the Wayne family murders would be making yet another appearance in the film. You can see several of the images below that showcase a more comic book accurate (and certainly Frank Miller approved) setting, where the Waynes died after a screening of 1940’s The Mark of Zorro, starring Tyrone Power, as opposed to the opera Faust. Yet, it marks the third time we’ve seen the Wayne murders in live-action after Batman (1989) and Batman Begins (2005). You could make that four times if you include this fall’s new Fox drama, Gotham.

Still, fans can rest assured that the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice plot revolves around a very old and experienced Batman, so expect a flashback. In 70mm, at that.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25, 2016.
