Mel Gibson is in talks to direct Hacksaw Ridge, a new World War II drama that may potentially star Andrew Garfield.
Whatever can be said about Mel Gibson (and there is a lot), that man knows how to structure a story about idealism and suffering. Thus, he might be perfect for a new World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge, which features the true story of Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Doss was serving as a U.S. Army medic during the Second World War when he refused to kill, even on the frontline of the Pacific campaign’s Battle of Okinawa, where he saved a multitude of lives.
Deadline reports that Gibson is circling talks at the moment, which are touch and go, but considering his ability to articulate the suffering of principle in Braveheart—not too mention The Passion of the Christ—makes him an appealing candidate to direct. Andrew Garfield is also reported to be in talks to star in the war drama as Desmond T. Doss.
