The cult classic comedy finally seems to be getting the Zoolander 2 sequel that it deserves! We just hope it has more than one look.
It’s been months since anyone has mentioned the possibility of a Zoolander sequel, but it seems like the project is gearing up to walk down the catwalk now for real.
Perhaps due to the box office success of another old comedy spawning a sequel (Dumb and Dumber To) or their own previous success with last Christmas's Anchorman 2, Paramount seems to be all-in on a Stiller-directed Zoolander sequel, with acclaimed actress Penelope Cruz signing on to co-star. Leftovers star Justin Theroux, who was featured as an evil DJ in the original, has penned the script, and Stiller will produce under his Red Hour banner.
The film is rumored to center on male models Derek Zoolander and Hansel (Owen Wilson) after they’ve faded from the limelight and will see the pair try to reclaim their former fame. At one point, Jonah Hill was being courted to play a villain, and it has also been rumored that Will Ferrell will reprise his role as ruthless fashion designer Mugatu.
The original film was released in the days following 9/11, and therefore only saw modest box office numbers, but the movie earned a cult following on DVD and is regularly replayed on cable and still quoted often. Comedy sequels rarely can capture the magic of their original outings, but with Stiller back directing and most of the original cast returning, this could have the potential to be something special, like Zoolander’s show-stopping look, Magnum! Holy Moley....
