The Expendables 4 will go back to being R-rated, as Sylvester Stallone admits a PG-13 Expendables film was a mistake...

Earlier this year, The Expendables 3 arrived in cinemas and did notably less business that its two predecessors. A good chunk of that is arguably down to the fact that the film leaked online and in full weeks ahead of its release. But also, there's the fact that Sylvester Stallone and his team went for a PG-13 rating, over the R-rated cuts of The Expendables and The Expendables 2.

Crave Online, chatting to Stallone, asked him about the decision to go for a PG-13 cut, and he admitted that "I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone’s part in trying to reach a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I’m quite certain it won’t happen again."

Stallone did have a secondary reason for option for a PG-13 cut in the first place though, arguing that "in an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in Expendables 4."

Basically: he may finally get around to killing off a major character in the next film. In the same interview, Stallone also confirmed that Mel Gibson had been in line to direct the film, before Gibson eventually opted not to do so.

Oh, and remember Stallone falling out with Bruce Willis, which led to the latter not appearing in The Expendables 3? Well, they're chums again now...
