Guillermo del Toro offers another hint or two about Dark Universe, his Justice League Dark movie.
We had started to worry that Guillermo del Toro's Dark Universe movie, about the supernatural characters in the DC Universe was a done deal. It wasn't on the initial slate of DC Superhero movie announcements, and there was word that it had stalled, or simply wouldn't be part of the "shared universe" that Warner Bros. is building.
Well, we were wrong. Recently, the director confirmed that a script for Dark Universe has just been turned in. That's progress. And now, in a new interview with Collider, he confirms the lineup of Swamp Thing, Demon, Deadman, and Zatanna. These probably aren't the only characters in it, but that's still a great lineup to start things off. But he does explicitly use the term "shared universe" to describe it, which is also progress.
We may as well give you the actual quote, too. "Right now the only sort of shared universe project I’m working on is Dark Universe for Warners, you know, for DC, which is Swamp Thing, Demon, Deadman, Zatanna. It’s a very different universe. As to the plans to the other one, I wish I had an inside track right now."
The context there is the question of whether or not he could get involved with Universal's new "shared monster universe," specifically with Frankenstein. However, since Mr. Del Toro told Den of Geek over the summer that he thinks Frankensteinreally can only work properly in a Victorian setting, and Universal seems intent on making these modern day action films. We can dream, though. After all, we didn't really think Dark Universewas ever going to happen.
