Bolstered by the success of this year's Godzilla, Japanese studio Toho is planning to make its own entry in the kaiju franchise...
Japan's most famous kaiju roared again in this year's Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards and produced by Legendary Pictures. Earning more than $500m worldwide, it was a fitting 60th anniversary gift to the giant monster, who first lit up the screen in Ishiro Honda's classic original in 1954.
According to a story over at Variety, Legendary's Hollywood Godzillamay have prompted Toho to make a new monster movie of its own. The last Japanese-language Godzillamovie was Final Wars, released in 2004 to a disappointingly tepid reception. It's hoped that a new Japanese entry in the franchise will tap into the success of Gareth Edwards' reboot in Godzilla's home country - his film earned a healthy $26m in Japan.
Of the new Godzilla, producer Taichi Ueda said that, "The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood."
Although little's known about Toho's new Godzillamovie, it's said that production will begin next summer, with the release scheduled for 2016 - that's two years before Edwards' planned Godzilla 2, which is set to come out in June 2018.
