Watch a new 10-minute featurette on the making of Richard Linklater's Boyhood--a stunning film that took 12 years to make.

Boyhood, the Richard Linklater ode to adolescence (and the adults it never ends for), took 12 years to make. Attempting to compress that to a 10-minute featurette seems ridiculously daunting…still I’m glad they tried.

As awards season is inching ever nearer, we will see many behind-the-scenes clips for the contenders, but none have had as fascinating a development as this ambitious project where Linklater spent over a decade filming in pieces a fictional life for Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Lorelei Linklater. The entire challenge of both getting actors, child and otherwise, to commit to that, as well as handle the logistical issues of shooting it all on 35mm, is explored in the below video (made possible via Hulu).

Boyhood has been in theaters since July, but if you haven’t seen it, do so now. It is already sweeping up many critics accolades, and I can say that very soon, we at Den of Geek will also be praising it in our year end coverage.
