The ever-confusing saga of Sony's Amazing Spider-Man franchise continues, but it looks like they're serious about Amazing Spider-Man 3.
The waters surrounding Sony's Amazing Spider-Manmovie franchise have been irrevocably muddied in the wake of the recent hack and subsequent release of stolen documents pertaining to a number of their projects. The latest series of Spider-Man movies weren't on the firmest of footing to begin with after the uninspired Amazing Spider-Man 2, a rather ill-advised attempt to branch out into the "shared universe" landscape that Marvel (and to a lesser extent, 20th Century Fox) have worked to their advantage, and screenwriter Roberto Orci washing his hands of Amazing Spider-Man 3.
The plan has been for the next Spider-Man related flick in Sony's arsenal to be The Sinister Six, focusing on a number of Spidey's villains, several of whom were introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That film seems to be in good hands with Cabin in the Woods' Drew Goddard attached as director. Spidey himself may or may not play a minor role in it. Sinister Six is (as far as we know) still slated for a November 2016 release date, with Amazing Spider-Man 3 set to follow in 2018.
But now there's this casting call that surfaced on the website of the NYC-based Bill Beckman Casting, looking for extras for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, with Andrew Garfield and Dane DeHaan listed as stars. It's not much to go on, but it's the first legitimate heartbeat we've seen on the Spider-Man movie front in months. I've reached out to Bill Beckman Casting in an attempt to find out how old the listing is, but it's Sunday, and may not receive a response until tomorrow, if at all. But it at least appears that website is updated frequently.
I wouldn't go jumping to conclusions based on this admittedly minor piece of information, though. It might just mean that the timetables on Sinister Sixand The Amazing Spider-Man 3 have shifted. Or it might mean nothing at all. We don't expect this to be cleared up soon.
I wrote more about the villains of The Amazing Spider-Man 3and The Sinister Sixright here.
