American Sniper smashes January box office records in the US, with a staggering weekend for Clint Eastwood's new film.

News

In one of the biggest box office surprises of recent memory, Clint Eastwood's new film - American Sniper - has reawaken memories of what a sleeper hit used to look like.

The film, which stars Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, has enjoyed a limited opening in the US over the past three weeks, qualifying it for the Academy Awards. The movie thus picked up six Oscar nominations last week, including a nod for Best Picture.

It finally got a wide release in America over the weekend however, and it would be fair to say that few people saw the size of its box office total coming.

We don't usually run box office stories like this, yet the movie nabbed $90,205,000 in three days. Yup: over $90 million. It did that without being a sequel, a franchise, a Marvel movie or having any ties to other films. Furthermore, it had an R-rating, and it's become the second highest opening of all time for an R-rated movie in America (behind The Matrix Reloaded).

Furthermore, it enjoyed its success in a weekend where other new films hit too. The Wedding Ringer opened to $21m in the US, and Paddington's Stateside bow earned him $19.2 million. Michael Mann's latest movie, Blackhat, was the casualty, scraping $4 million on its opening weekend.

American Sniper is on course now to be the highest grossing film of Clint Eastwood's career, whether in front of or behind the camera. It's also, by distance, the biggest grossing movie of all this year's Best Picture Oscar nominees.

It'll be interesting to see if its numbers for next weekend stack up as well. We suspect they will...
