Want more Kick-Ass? Too bad. Mark Millar is moving on. There won't be a Hit-Girl movie, either.
NewsIf you were hoping to see more Kick-Ass books in the future, you can probably stop that now. Mark Millar has been talking about the books and movies while promoting Kingsman: The Secret Service. He told IGN that he wouldn't be pursuing any more Kick-Ass books or movies.
Millar said:
Dave Lizewski’s journey had to have an ending because the way I looked at it is if you don’t have Batman’s money or Superman’s powers, you’re going to end up dead pretty fast. So the idea of Kick-Ass #520 is ridiculous because he’s going to have been killed in issue 45 or something. So I had to give it a conclusion. For people who haven’t read the book I don’t want to spoil it, but Kick-Ass 3 is the end of Dave’s story.
Now Mindy is another thing – there could be more stuff going on with Mindy. There could be other people who are going to be Kick-Ass as well – that’s hinted at at the end of Kick-Ass 3. But for Dave it’s all over, that’s it. And for me it’s all over as well probably.
Kick-Ass has had three volumes worth of comic books, as well as a Hit-Girl solo series, which was also used for the Kick-Ass 2 film. There have been two Kick-Ass movies, with a possibility for a third to wrap things up. Until now. Millar says that's not happening, either:
With Kick-Ass 1 we knew we were doing a sequel because the first one cost $28m and made $100m and then did $140m on TV and DVD, so it was a no-brainer – of course there was a Kick-Ass 2. But the second one cost a little less – it cost £24m, but it only made back $60m and with TV money and everything it was slightly in profit. It didn’t lose money. But did it make enough money to justify a third one? You know you’ve always got to listen to the audience, and if people didn’t come out in droves for it, it means there’s no audience.
But there was a Hit-Girl solo film in the works for a while. In fact, they even had a very exciting director in mind:
Before Kick-Ass 2 came out we’d been talking about a Hit-Girl spin-off movie. We’d even talked to a director – we had a couple of calls with Gareth Evans, who I absolutely love. He’s an amazing director. But Gareth’s now busy. Matthew [Vaughn] still floats it occasionally. I’m very philosophical about it – I’ve done my books and I’m really happy with the work and happy with the films. If anything else happens – gravy.
Evans, as you may know, directed The Raid. That would have been one hell of an action film, and perhaps a nice continuation to Hit-Girl's story.
