There hasn't been too much to report about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 yet, but James Gunn just offered the first real clue.
NewsOver the last few months, James Gunn has offered several variations of the same Guardians of the Galaxy 2 story. His latest is a little different, which comes thanks to Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend, and offers a little more insight. For starters, "we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole." That's exciting. But there's more.
Another thing is that you shouldn't expect this to have a ready-made comic book counterpart the way we've seen with The Winter Soldier or Days of Future Past.
"It’s not really based on anything. The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. We’ll get to know some of the characters a little bit more and then we’re going to meet a couple of new characters who will be very important to Guardians movies and probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole."
He also clarified that "Peter Quill’s father is somebody different in the comics." Most interestingly, Marvel heard the plan for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 from Mr. Gunn, he described their reaction as "they were like, ‘Oh, whoa. That’s risky, but okay.’"
So moviegoers will be spared the revelation that Star-Lord's dad is J'son of Spartaxx, the emperor of the galaxy. That's good. Now, you may all commence speculating who his real dad is. But if Star-Lord's father is one of those characters who is "probably important to the Marvel Universe as a whole" then that could mean big things.
