Ghostbusters: "Conventional" Sequel Might Still Happen

Dan Aykroyd reckons there's still a chance for Ghostbusters 3, if the Paul Feig-directed reboot is a hit...

Production starts later this year on Paul Feig's brand new Ghostbusters movie, that's going to be headlined - as you probably know - by Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. Sony opted for this reboot of sorts instead of the long-in-gestation Ghostbusters 3, and Feig's movie will arrive in July 2016.

However, Dan Aykroyd, who had been working for some time on developing the Ghostbusters 3 project, is holding the door open to getting the old gang together again. "There's three drafts of the old concept that exists," he told Sirius XM. "And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it."

Lest you think that he's simply talking about using that material and amalgamating it into an unrelated project, Aykroyd continued. "We're going to be able to use it some day. Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise, and then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning, and another idea I have for it."

Aykroyd also declared that he's "very happy" with what Paul Feig has done. "The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed a new exhaust, it needed new steering, and this is what we're getting."

All that said, however, we'd be surprised now if Aykroyd's Ghostbusters 3 ever made it to the screen. Unless Sony is planning a Ghostbusters movie universe of sorts (stranger things have happened), should the Paul Feig-directed reboot hit big, then we'd assume it'll order a sequel to that instead. But we'll keep you posted as we hear more...
