In a pop culture landscape already filled with at least three major Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Downey Jr.) some may think we do not need another. However, when Sir Ian McKellen offers his services to play one of the most iconic names in literature, you say yes.
It has been announced that Sir Ian McKellen shall be moving into 221B Baker Street in Bill Condon’s upcoming adaptation of A Slight Trick of Mind, a novel by Mitch Cullin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story follows a retired Sherlock Holmes who is still haunted by the nightmares of an unsolved case from 50 years ago.
This will be Condon and McKellen’s first collaboration since Gods & Monsters, Condon’s fictional account about the final days of legendary filmmaker James Whale. That project netted McKellen an Oscar nomination. Currently, Condon is finishing up his Julian Assange/WikiLeaks picture (also with Cumberbatch), called The Fifth Estate. And McKellen just wrapped work on X-Men: Days of Future Past.
